Shalom Haverim! (Hello Friends!)

This month is a very eventful and meaningful month! What makes May 2013 so special? Two things! The State of Israel celebrates the 65th anniversary of its founding and Pentecost is celebrated! These two events are not only days of celebration, but they are also sure signs that we are living in the last days before Jesus returns!

The celebration of Pentecost this year is on Sunday, the 19th, although the Jewish feast of Shavuot (Pentecost) is on the Wednesday, May 15 this year! (Beginning at sundown on the 14th through sundown on the 15th.)

Shavuot was the day on which the Children of Israel received the Torah as they dwelt at the base of Mount Sinai. It had been 50 days (Pentecost means 50 days) since the Exodus and their deliverance from the Egyptians! Now, the LORD gave them the Torah (or Law) which really means “teaching or Instruction.” It was also the time which was considered the end of the Passover event or season. It was a very important day which the Israelites were to celebrate and later one of the three days when the men of Israel were required to assemble before the LORD in Jerusalem.

The Day of Pentecost detailed in the second chapter of Acts, was the day when God poured out His Spirit upon all flesh in accordance with His promise in the book of the prophet Joel. The outpouring on this Day of Pentecost was the fulfillment of the promise that everyone who believed would receive a full measure of the Spirit of God to live within them! There were no limits, all were included: sons, daughters, old men, young men, servants and handmaidens! God was now going to live in power within His people! His Presence would give them the power to live according to the teaching which He had given in the Torah!

Peter, in his sermon in Acts 2, equates the outpouring of the Holy Spirit which the crowd was witnessing that day with that which was spoken of the by the prophet Joel. Acts 2:17, 18 “And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: 18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:” He states that Joel prophesied that it would be in the last days before the Day of the Lord that the Spirit of the Lord would be poured out! It was and that day was in the beginning of the last days!

65th Anniversary of the State of Israel

May 14, 1948 brought about the event which fulfilled prophecy and amazed the world! It was the day when David Ben-Gurion proclaimed, “We hereby proclaim the establishment of the Jewish state…to be called Israel.” A nation had been reborn! For the first time in 2,000 years there was a Jewish State! It would be an event which marks the end times and the last generation!

The impossible happened on May 14, 1948! Isaiah’s prophecy was fulfilled! Isaiah 66:8 from the Complete Jewish Bible says, “Who ever heard of such a thing? Who has ever seen such things? Is a country born in one day? Is a nation brought forth all at once? For as soon as Tziyon (Zion) went into labor, she brought forth her children.” A nation was born in ONE DAY, just as was prophesied! The promise of God was that He would regather Israel and restore them fully.

Ezekiel prophesies that the Lord would regather Israel, show Himself holy to them, and pour out His Spirit on the house of Israel. Ezekiel  39:27-29 “When I have brought them back from the nations and have gathered them from the countries of their enemies, I will show myself holy through them in the sight of many nations.” 28 “Then they will know that I am the LORD their God, for though I sent them into exile among the nations, I will gather them to their own land, not leaving any behind.” 29 “I will no longer hide my face from them, for I will pour out my Spirit on the house of Israel, declares the Sovereign LORD.” (NIV)

Amos 9:15 declares that the LORD would plant Israel in their own land and that they would never again be uprooted. “I will plant Israel in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land I have given them, says the LORD your God.” (NIV)

Ezekiel 37:21, 22a “And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land: 22 And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all:” This passage requires three things, all of which point to Israel’s restoration being an indication of the last days. Israel will be restored to their land, revived as a nation and under the rule of one king! Israel has been brought back to its land and revived as a nation, but has yet to be under the rule of the promised monarch! This will occur when Jesus returns to sit upon the throne of His father, David!

Ministry in April

Our ministry schedule in April was much lighter than in March, but we enjoyed the opportunity to share the Good News! One such opportunity was at a church very near to where we live. We had the joy and privilege of ministering to the congregation of New Life Church in Russellville, Arkansas! These folks are quite dear to us! We have ministered there on three occasions and I helped in their Christian School, New Life Academy last school year as a math teacher (Although I feel that teacher may be too strong a term. I was more like a guy with the answer key!)! I was thrilled when Pastor Mike Ames invited me to come and share! It was a great service and we, as always, enjoyed ourselves immensely!

(From L to R: Cameron Ames, Emily Ames, Hazel Ames, Kim Dockins, Pastor Mike Ames, Jay Dockins and Breanna Ames!)

New Life Church has a rather unique situation! Pastor Ames became pastor of the church last year as founding pastor, Jim Huddleston, retired! I have watched and seen these two men exemplify the grace and personality of Jesus during their transition. I have never seen two men exhibit more love and respect for each other than these two do! They are both friends of mine and I treasure them and their families deeply!

Jewish Vocabulary
This month’s term is eretz Israel. It means, “the land of Israel, the territory of the Jewish state.”

I will close this newsletter with an invitation for each person who reads this. Please go to the comments section and leave your comment or question. I enjoy getting comments and would love to hear from you!

Until next month, Shalom!
