jay dockins’ march 2013 rock of israel newsletter

Shalom Haverim! (Hello Friends!),

Winter is still here with us, but Spring is not far away! As we enter the month of March we can sense that the weather is struggling toward getting warmer and the days longer (even without the aid of Daylight Savings Time)! We all look forward to more pleasant temperatures, the emergence of beautiful plants and flowers, the grass turning green and outside activity increasing as the season changes and the weather improves! What glorious and welcome changes Spring brings!

Spring is also the time when we celebrate the greatest event which has ever occurred in human history! The Resurrection of Jesus from the dead will be celebrated on March 31 in churches all around the world! The Feast of First Fruits, which is representative of the resurrection, occurs on the third day after Passover which begins on March 25/26 this year! On the 17th of Nisan, three days after the Lamb is slain, the celebration of First Fruits occurred. A sheaf from the barley and wheat harvests was brought to the priest who would wave them before the LORD in His house. It was given in anticipation of a great and abundant harvest!

The 17th of Nisan is a day when several significant events occurred in the Word.
1. The ark of Noah came to rest on Mount Ararat (Genesis 8:4). The ark rested on the 17th day of the seventh month (counting from Tishrei when the civil year begins).
2. It the date that Israel crossed the Red Sea (Exodus 3:18; 5:3, 14).
3. Israel ate of the first fruits of the Promised Land after the manna given from heaven ceased on the 16th day of Nisan, after the people ate of the old corn. They ate of the first fruits of the land on the 17th of Nisan. (Joshua 5:10-12)
4.  Haman, the enemy of the Jewish people was defeated, being hanged on this date. (Esther3:1-6, 12; 4:16; 5:4)
5. And the MOST IMPORTANT is the Resurrection of Jesus, the Messiah! Jesus is the First Fruits of all generations! (John 12:24; 1 Corinthians 15:16-20, Matthew 27:52-53)

Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread present the Messiah as God’s Sinless Savior for the World! First Fruits Presents Him As the Victorious, Conqueror of Death Who brings Life to those who believe on Him!

February was a busy month for me! I spent the first few days of the month in West Palm Beach, Florida, at the South Florida Fair. Rock of Israel has a booth at the fair each year where we share the Good News with all who will hear! We were assisted by some wonderful local volunteers who gave unselfishly of their time to help us in the booth! Richard and Hannah Greenfield, along with Juan and Frances Mercado and their son, were fabulous and made the experience a pleasant one! (The Greenfield’s and Mercado’s pictures appear in last month’s newsletter!)

I also had the opportunity to visit the Sunday morning service of Faith Family Worship Center in Palm City, Florida! My long-time friends Russ and Betty Jones pastor the church and allowed me to come and be with them on Super Bowl Sunday! I shared briefly about the ministry of Rock of Israel and presented Pastor Russ with some books from the library of the Rev. Thomas Gotcher, Russ’ pastor when he was a teenager, and a pastor for whom I had served as Youth Pastor. (Pastor Gotcher’s son, Mark, is the principal of the school where my wife is secretary.) Pastor Gotcher passed away in July of last year and the family wanted Russ to have a few books from his library! I had the honor of presenting the books to Russ before he preached. It was quite a moment and one of just a few times that I have ever seen him surprised and with not much to say! It was a very special time for me and for Russ!

Later in the month I had the privilege of ministering at Faith Alive Church in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, where Elvin Still serves as pastor. It was a joy to minister to this congregation, teaching about the Passover and giving a “brief” outline of the Feasts from Leviticus 23! It was a wonderful day of fellowship and ministry!

The month of March will bring about a flurry of Passover Seders for the staff of Rock of Israel. These very special services take a congregation through the traditional Passover meal and show what Jesus was telling His disciples during what we know as the “Last Supper”! They are wonderful services which I truly love (the horseradish, not so much)! I do these services throughout the year but they come in a flurry right before Resurrection Day!

Jewish Vocabulary

The Jewish vocabulary word for the month is “omer” which is the sheaf of barley which is waved before the Lord on First Fruits. It is symbolic of Jesus who is the firstfruits of the resurrection!

Pastors, I am always available to discuss scheduling a service with your church! As I mentioned, I do Passover Seders but also preach and teach on MANY OTHER SUBJECTS and would love to share with your congregation! (The Feasts of the Lord, The Prayer Shawl, Proofs of the Resurrection, etc.) If I can be of service to you I would be honored!
